OLD SCHOOL VS NEW SCHOOL

OLD SCHOOL VS NEW SCHOOL

This week we get to know the coolest cat on the jazzy block, creative genius, tailor and designer T-Michael.

His ability to fuse the craftsmanship of old world artisans with a contemporary aesthetic makes him the ultimate muse for this week's edit: Old school cool vs New school drool

A theme which has manifested in some ‘must-have’ little ‘thingies’ (technical term) and an absolutely dribble worthy take on all things delicious by the equally inspiring and incredibly talented Caroline Khoo. Founder and Creative Director of Nectar and Stone who critics* follow with the cult-like loyalty that only a sugary-dusted goddess can muster. She is leading the charge as a businesswoman, author, creative director and all-round superwoman who is taking over the world one pastel coloured meringue at a time!

Keep an eye out for some of my favourite pieces by my favorite artist, Cy Twombly. If Caroline’s sugary confections don’t have you drooling his graffiti-like expressive lines and emotive works will.

So bib up and enjoy you beasts!

Tell us a little about you and how you discovered your aesthetic.

I’m T-Michael, based in Bergen which is situated on the west coast of Norway. Known internationally as the gateway to Fjords. I moved from London to Bergen 29 years ago. I’m originally from Ghana. I embarked on this journey on my 30th birthday, right on the day! I started out as a bespoke Tailor making suits for a select client list and over the years have widened my scope of creativity by adding shoes, bags, shirts to my collection. I’ve dabbled in films and sunglasses. 10 years ago together with Alexander Helle started a brand called Norwegian Rain. The idea is simple: Making 100% waterproof jackets and coats without it looking like a raincoat. I launched 3 seasons ago, the T-Kimono, a collaboration between Y. & Sons and myself.

When did you know fashion was the medium you wanted to express yourself through?

I’ve always had a thing for sprucing up. Finding the right trousers, that shoe.. However it wasn’t until I hit my early 20’s that I felt I had an eye for details. You know this thing develops slowly as you discover more about your self. I’m still discovering new channels of expressing myself

If you had 24 hours to spend in one city what would be and what would be your top spot for food or sundowners?

That’s a difficult one. Tokyo is always amazing! A spread of various culinary delights on a table will do very nicely thank you.

What’s playing on your Spotify / iTunes right now?

Various compilations of Ghanaian tunes from the 60’s and 70’s

What are your style staples?

Crispy white shirts

If you were stranded on a Desert island what would be the 3 things you’d take?

Cigar, whiskey and a well kitted bathroom.

Most used emoji?

Love

Favourite food to make at home?

I’m really into szechuan aubergine at the moment!

Who or what inspires your work?

Everything around me

What is it about fashion that you love so much?

Not much. I love the creativity.
